Technology often helps us, but it has also made our brains lazier. After all, we no longer do our best to remember something, we just look for it on the internet. When we add to that the excess of information from all the media and our agendas full of obligations, it is easy to understand why we forget things. In the following article, we’ll tell you some easy tips to improve your memory. These include exercise and new healthy habits.

The process to improve your memory

Just as the brain forgets many things, it can also recover in a short time. This means that you can gain more mental capacity through techniques or easy tips to improve your memory.

In reality, we all have the ability to remember things, but the problem is that our minds have become accustomed to less effort.

Not paying attention, reading superficially, thinking about something else, not reflecting… They are all enemies of good memory.

We should also add that if we try to remember something and we can’t, we get stressed. Therefore, it is difficult for us to find that word, fact or date that we have stored in the deepest part of our memory.

We also need to recognize that we often don’t allow our brains to think or remember things. We don’t let them rest properly and don’t give them enough time to absorb important information.

Colorful posters, TV ads, social networks, searches… These all attack the powers of the brain. Therefore, in order to have a great memory, you must apply the following techniques.

1. Reconstructing Facts

It has probably happened more than once that you have forgotten where you left your keys. You searched for it for hours with no results.

A good way to remember where you left them is of course to choose a place where you always put them, but if not , you can use the “fact reconstruction” technique.

This means that you should take a few minutes to remember what you have done since you got home (what you had in your hands, where you put other objects, what did you do the last time you saw the keys, and so on) . Suddenly you see before you the place where you left them.

2. Use mnemo technique

Perhaps the teachers at school taught you how to remember formulas, facts or dates using so-called mnemonics. This allows us to associate information with short sentences or word sequences. In this way a lot of information is summarized and it is easier to access.

It basically serves to remember this information without having to repeat it like a parrot. And best of all, these concepts are not easily forgotten, even if years have passed.

One of the best known is  ‘t Kofschip. If you want to know whether the simple past tense of a regular verb gets stam + te or stam + de, look at the consonant that precedes the ending -en in the entire verb. If this letter occurs in ‘t kofschip , then we write stam + te, otherwise stam + de.

Of course, you can use the mnemo technique however you want, with words or personal phrases. These can be the initials of family members’ names, birthdays, a character from a book… You can’t think of it that crazy, as long as you can remember it easily.

3. Read out loud

One of the easy tips to improve your memory is to read aloud. Often you can remember concepts better when you explain something to someone else. In addition to improving your understanding by explaining something you have studied in words, the fact that the brain is listening to the information helps you retain it.

That’s why it’s important to read aloud when you study or when you want to keep something in your memory.

Not only that, it’s also good to read printed books or newspapers “like the old days”. Screens inhibit our understanding and the light they emit causes headaches.

4. Rest and relaxation

This example of easy tips for improving your memory is based on the fact that the mind needs to capture concepts while not doing anything else.

If you go to the movies, watch the news, or surf Facebook after college, you probably don’t remember what information you just learned.

That’s why we recommend that you take a nap after an “information bombardment” (of course, only if you don’t want to forget it). You can also take a walk in the park, exercise, take a hot shower, or listen to classical music. This way your mind will have nothing to distract itself with.

5. Change your routine

The brain needs new habits and adventures. Monotony makes them even lazier and restless. If you want to remember something and have a good memory, you need to change some of your daily activities or at least do them in a different order.

New changes increase your mental capacity, because the mind has to pay attention to something it did not know or is not used to.

Remember that the mind is very curious and loves challenges. We all have the ingredients it needs to be more efficient and stop forgetting things.
