Citronella essential oil is a classic insect repellent. Still, we need to make this clear: you can make this type of remedy at home yourself, but it won’t kill mosquitoes or other insects.

What does it do? It makes the insects go away. It doesn’t eradicate them.

That’s why you need to know if there are damp places in your house that promote the growth of these types of insects, because then you need to take bigger steps. For example, you will have to transplant things, hang a mosquito net and so on.

Let’s first look at how to make your own floating citronella scented candles.

What do you need for this?

  • Two glass bowls or jars
  • lemons (2 pieces)
  • 2 limes
  • floating candles that are big enough to fit in both bowls
  • 2 sprigs of rosemary
  • 10 sage leaves
  • fresh lavender (10 sprigs)
  • 10 drops of citronella essential oil
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 ribbons to decorate the bowls or jars (optional)

How do you make the candles?

It is easy to put all the elements in the bowls or jars. That means each plant and the lime and lemon slices.

  • To start, we cut the lime and lemon into slices. They should be about one centimeter thick.
  • First you put the aromatic plants in the bowls.
  • Evenly distribute the rosemary, lavender and sage leaves.
  • Then place the citrus slices on top of the aromatic plants.
  • Then add the drops of citronella essential oil. Put five drops in each bowl.
  • Then you add the water. Pour water into the bowl until it is slightly higher than the center of the bowl (do not fill the bowl completely).
  • The next step is just as easy. When you add the water, you will notice that the citrus fruits float. The discs form a good base to put the candles on.
  • Floating candles can be found in any decoration or hobby store. These candles are designed to float on liquid. In this case, they will rest on a slice of lime or lemon.
  • Now there is only one thing left: to decorate the glass bowl. Tie the ribbon around the bowl or jar. Finished!

These pots are therefore both decorative and effective in repelling mosquitoes.

For this project you will spend some time in the kitchen. Why? You will have to melt the wax. So read very carefully what the different steps are.

  • First you need to put the candle wick in the jars. When you buy the candle wicks in the store, you will see that they already have an aluminum base. You only need to place it in the middle of the glass jar.
  • Now put the empty jars in the oven, because you have to heat them up (so make sure you can!).
  • Set the oven to the lowest temperature. That is enough. Let the jars warm up for fifteen to twenty minutes. That way the wax will be firmer when you put it in the jars.
  • At the same time, melt the wax in a pan on the stove.
  • When the wax has a composition like olive oil, it is ready. Then turn off the heat and add the ten drops of essential oil.
  • Then pour the wax into each bowl. Be careful not to burn yourself.
  • Always remember to keep the candle wick centered.
  • When the wax has cooled, cut the wick to the appropriate length.

Your scented candles that repel insects are now ready. Decorate the jars with the ribbons and enjoy the candles. You will love it for sure!
